Non-Traditional Ways of Giving

NEWS YOU CAN USE:

With the holidays quickly approaching, gift-giving may be on the minds of many in the weeks to come. Conversations surrounding gift exchange often leads to discussions of finances and budgets. There are traditional ways of gift-giving such as purchasing, exchanging, then returning the gesture. Gifts can also be purchased online and directly delivered to your home or office. Gift cards and money are very popular and convenient, especially at the last minute.

This time of year isn’t just about food or gifts, however; it’s a time for prioritizing our lives with traditional values such as generosity, gratitude, family, peace, and joy. As we begin to discuss with our family and friends ideas and budgets for the holiday season, let’s include some non-traditional ways of giving gifts!

What you can do:

Simple but personal ways of giving:

  • Your Time and Talents –handmade gifts are priceless
  • Events / Classes – including plays, musicals, fitness, woodworking, crafting
  • Food Gifts/ Baskets –a special, fancy treat beyond the typical groceries
  • Digital / Tech – support including extended warranties
  • Services – DIY spa, house cleaning, yard maintenance, child and pet care
  • Experiences – a gift of memories, a shared experience
  • Memberships/ Subscriptions – catering to their passions
  • Donations – to a charity in their name or honor

The “Gift of Life” can be given in several ways including:

  • Organ donation: Registering to be an organ, eye or tissue donor is a selfless act of love and courage that can save lives. It’s a gift that doesn’t require wrapping. Visit: https://RegisterMe.org  or https://www.organdonor.gov  to learn more.
  • Blood donation:   Every year millions of lives are saved because of the donation of blood, including platelets. A decision to donate your blood, platelets or plasma can save a life, maybe several!  Visit https://donors.vitalant.org for more information.
  • CPR – AED/ First Aid: Learning to save a life is a rewarding gift that warms the heart. While contacting 911 and waiting for the ambulance to arrive, lifesaving CPR/AED or First Aid can be delivered. This is when CPR training comes in handy. Everyone can benefit from learning how to handle an emergency. CPR classes can be in-person or a hybrid blend. Visit: www.3cpr.org to find a class near you.

“The spirit of the season’s” meaning comes from how it makes you feel inside as the recipient and the giver. The greatest gifts are not boxes filled with things, but beautiful presents that hold so much more: love, kindness, selflessness, and gratitude. They all make up the beautiful “gift of life”.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF:

  1. What are some non-traditional ways of giving you can implement this holiday season?
  2. Describe what blocks you from adopting a non-traditional gift-giving tradition with your family?

MONTHLY AFFIRMATION:
The greatest gift you can give someone is your time. When you give your time, you are giving a portion of your life you will never get back. How can you give your time this holiday season?

MONTHLY THOUGHT:
Your generosity is often continued down the line to someone else or returned to you – Pay it forward!
