Advanced Stroke Life Support (ASLS)

The AHA’s Advanced Stroke Life Support (ASLS) course builds on the foundation of lifesaving skills; aiming to educate prehospital and in hospital healthcare providers to optimize the identification, evaluation and treatment of patients with acute stroke, and identify the five main stroke syndromes and relate them to pathophysiology and clinical signs. The course objective is to explain the importance of an organized approach to treating patients with stroke for improved patient outcomes, and describe the management goals also. This course meets the education requirements for Stroke Center Certification.

Upon completion of this course, you will receive a 2 year ASLS certification through American Heart Association and 8 hours of continuing education credit.

Detailed Description

Advanced Stroke Life Support (ASLS)

There are 3 tracks available for students to learn how to assess and manage stroke emergencies: prehospital, in-hospital, and a third track that covers both settings. Learning objectives for these tracks include:

Prehospital Provider Course:

  • Highlights the principles of prehospital stroke management that make up the current standard of care, such as determining when to call
  • A stroke alert and quickly transport the patient to the nearest appropriate facility
  • Explains how to communicate the patient’s symptoms, time of onset, and neuro-logic exam clearly and succinctly with hospital personnel

In-Hospital Provider Course:

  • Focuses on the importance of an organized approach to treating stroke patients for improved outcomes
  • Discusses the etiologic evaluation and secondary stroke prevention for stroke patients
  • Describes the management of goals for acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Outlines post-acute care management including supportive medical care, rehabilitation, and discharge planning for stroke patients

Prehospital & In-Hospital Provider Course:

  • Combines all of the components of the Prehospital and In-Hospital courses, and is best suited for healthcare providers who work in both environments, as well as ASLS instructor candidates that will be conducting the in-person skills testing for learners from both audiences

If you require Continuing Education credits for your course, please submit to us, in writing, your request, and send it to the email address PRIOR to the start of your course. According to the American Heart Association, CEUs for in-person courses are only offered to EMS providers. RNs, pharmacists, PAs, and physicians may qualify for CEUs credits if they are enrolled in a Hybrid/Online Skills Course and if eligible can claim these CEUs through their AHA elearning portal.
