The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner. This course teaches the skills of CPR for victims of all ages, including ventilation with a barrier device, use of an AED on adults and children, and relief of foreign body airway obstruction in responsive and non-responsive victims.

Topics include:

  • Critical concepts of high-quality CPR.
  • The American Heart Association Chain of Survival.
  • 1-Rescuer/ 2-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant.
  • Differences between adult, child and infant rescue techniques.
  • Bag Valve Mask (BVM) techniques for adult, child and infant.
  • Rescue breathing for adult, child and infant.
  • Relief of choking for adult, child and infant.
  • CPR with an advanced airway.
  • Compression/ventilation rate and ratio for a patient who has an advanced airway in place.

BLS(Basic Life Support) is the CPR/AED course required by the state of Colorado for any medical professional or student enrolled in school for a healthcare profession (MD, CNA, RN, EMT, Phlebotomist, etc.). If you work as a healthcare provider in Colorado you are required to carry a current BLS card.

Detailed Description

BLS Healthcare Provider CPR/AED

This course is for anyone taking BLS for the first time or if you let your BLS certification expire. The class is approximately 3-hours long and includes a 2 year certification from the American Heart Association.

BLS Renewal

The BLS Renewal course is for anyone with a current BLS certification through the American Heart Association. You MUST have your AHA BLS card to be eligible for this class and your card cannot be expired.  You will be asked to show your current BLS card when you arrive to your course. Testing will include both a written and skills portion. Upon completion you will receive a 2 year BLS certification through the American Heart Association.

BLS Hybrid Class Online/Skills

The BLS Hybrid Class Online/ Skills course is a practical skills testing session for students who have completed the didactic portion of BLS and the written test online via the American Heart Association’s website. During the 1 hour skills session, you will be tested on information from the online course and on the practical skills presented in the online course. Upon completion of the skills session, you will receive a 2 year BLS certification through the American Heart Association.

  • Purchase and complete HeartCode BLS Part 1.
  • Schedule a date to come in and complete the hands on portion.
  • Make sure to bring the online completion certificate with you to class.

FAQ

Yes, CPR and AED usage are the main focuses of the BLS course though there are several other topics covered

The American Heart association requires that all students have access to the newest edition of the BLS Provider Manual during and after the class.  If you do not have access to one, books will be on sale at the beginning of each class for $30. An eBook can be purchased for $30.

No, First Aid training is not a part of the BLS course and though it is uncommon, some institutions may require you to carry a First Aid card. If it is required by your employer, we do offer a separate First Aid course.

The AHA has shortened the name of this certification by removing “for the Healthcare Provider”. This new BLS Course card replaces the BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS HCP) and BLS for Prehospital Providers (BLS PHP) course cards.
